Care

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels belong to the breeds with type of Medium-length coats

Type ‘Medium-Length Coats’

Hair follicle life cycle: 75 -90 days (i.e. the coat is replaced on average every 75-90 days)

Normal frequent bathing: once a month

Dogs with medium-long fur are those that have longer main hair and shorter than the main – second type of hair. In one hair follicle there is 1 main hair and 12 subhairs. There is also a difference in the structure of the two types of hair:
The main hair is smooth and looks like a human in structure. There are cuticles that under a microscope look like cuts on it. It also contains the main pigment that determines the color of the dog! The second so-called “undercoat” has an uneven structure and looks like cotton under a microscope. The pigment is very low. Both types of hair have the function of ventilating the dog’s skin and protecting it from the summer heat and the winter cold.
THAT IS WHY WE NEVER SHAVE SUCH BREEDS! NEVER!
This type of fur sheds the most with the change of seasons and the length of the day. The peak moments are June 21st and December 21st.
The losing of the fur starts from the tail towards the head, until it is completely changed. We need to comb regularly to remove dead hair that gets tangled in the rest when it could not fall freely. The hair muscles of this type of coat are stronger and it is possible to comb in the opposite direction of hair growth (most often this is done to create volume).
The skin of this breed is normally oily, because here, the role of guardian of the channels around the main hair falls on the undercoat. Therefor, the products need to hydrate, tone and add texture so that the undercoat does not flatten and the dog eventually looks unwashed and uncombed. It is not recommended to use drying products with alcohol, because the coat stays puffy, pale in color and difficult, very difficult to comb!
